Early Morning Hay Barn Fire Near Guymon

KSCB News - December 9, 2015 11:00 am

Early Wednesday morning, Guymon Firefighters were called to a reported structure fire 3 miles north and 0.3 miles west of Guymon. Responding units from the Guymon Fire Department found a fully engulfed hay storage unit on fire. ??Flames were easily seen from the north end of Guymon city limits heading to the scene?, said Assistant Fire Chief Grant Wadley.
The hay barn was approximately 150ft x 60ft with approximately ?? of the barn full of large baled hay. The hay and barn were complete losses for the owner Mike Ray of Guymon. Estimated loss of the building is $20,000 and loss of hay is estimated at $100,000. Firefighter, along with the land owner, were able to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby round hay bales and move tractors and implements away from any fire or heat damage. Cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Guymon Fire Department.
??Hay fires of this size and magnitude are very difficult if not impossible to completely extinguish using water and fire hose lines?, said Wadley. The location of this fire was remote with no other structures or exposures nearby. Wind conditions were very low and not expected to increase throughout the night and Wednesday. Firefighters considered many options and found the best for this fire is to allow it to completely burn itself out. As of 9:00am Wednesday morning, large amounts of smoke from this area can still be observed from Guymon. Fire Officials will be monitoring the fire throughout the day and into the next several days along with the land owner.
Agencies responding included the Guymon Fire Department, Texas County Sheriff Department, Guymon Police Department, and Tri-County Electric.
