A Real Downer in Dodge City

KSCB News - March 26, 2012 7:18 am

The Saints baseball season is headed the wrong direction after dropping 3-4 in Dodge City this weekend. Sunday the last place Conqs swept the Saints 6-4 and 11-6. Seward’s season has probably hit the low point of what was a promising year after the Saints won the Jayhawk West and the Region 6 last year and won two games at the JUCO World Series.

Sunday at Cavalier Field in Dodge City the last place Conquistadors rallied twice to clip the Saints.

In game one, the Saints led 2-1 after scoring two in the third after a sacrifice fly by Carlos Dorado scored Steven Polito from second and Willie Gustin doubled home Tanner Rainey. Dodge City scored two more in the bottom of the fourth before adding one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Seward threatened in the seventh scoring two runs and loading the bases with one out before hitting into a double play to end the game. Guymon’s Walker Rainwater pitched six and one-third innings for the win to improve his record to 2-0.

In game two, DCCC ran out of starting pitching and had to piece together their pitching staff. But they held the Saints to just seven hits. Seward led 6-5 going to the bottom of the eighth. The Conqs went off for six runs and two homeruns in the eighth. Dodge City’s Cody Voelker hit two homers to give him six on the season and drove in seven runs. Sublette High graduate and former Liberal Bulldog Travis Leverett pitched two and two-thirds innings striking out four and walking none.

Seward falls to 16-17 overll and 9-7 in the Jayhawk West while the NJCAA division 2 Conqs are 8-16 overall and 5-11 in the Jayhawk West.

The Saints host Garden City Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
