Wildfires Roar Through Listening Area

Wildfires and smoke poured into the listening area Tuesday.  Fire warnings were posted in Beaver and Texas Couties and Tyrone was evacuated.

Seward County Emergency Management said A Disaster Declaration has been made.

Smoke poured into Liberal yesterday afternoon, but the Liberal fire department said there was no evacuation threat to Liberal. The Kansas Highway Patrol issued evacuations for the southwest corner of Seward County where there was some damage to homes.

The Seward County Activity Center is currently open and available as a shelter for evacuees. If you have been displaced or require a safe place to stay, please head there immediately.

Texas County Emergency Management reported two wildfires on Tuesday. One of the fires, known as the “Side Road Fire,” started after a seven-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 54, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Emergency Management.

Evacuation orders were issued for a wildfire known as the “Stevens Fire.” Those orders were still in place for the town of Tyrone at about 8 p.m. The community was told to evacuate at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Texas County fire moved over the state line into Kansas.

Shelters were opened in Liberal for those displaced by the fire at CrossPoint Church, 204 North Sherman Avenue.

At least five structures were destroyed by the fires, and more than 8,300 acres burned in Texas County.

TCEC says Tyrone and the area northeast is out of power due to the fire. Crews are working to restore power for Tyrone.

The Beaver County Emergency Management said numerous outbuildings were destroyed in a wildfire known as the “Ranger Road Fire.”

Oklahoma Forestry Services officials said they estimate about 145,000 acres burned in Beaver County from the wildfires.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol posted pictures of a fire in Forgan, where authorities shut down the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 64.
