Vintage Aircraft At Salina Airshow

KSCB News - July 7, 2009 12:00 am

Fans of vintage aircraft have a chance to see three World War II planes in Salina for a few days.

A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, a Consolidated B-24J Liberator and a North American Dual Control P-51C Mustang were scheduled to land today at Salina Municipal Airport.

The planes are taking part in the Wings of Freedom Tour. The Liberator and the Mustang are billed as the only remaining examples of their type still flying.

Tours of the planes are planned for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, before they leave at noon Friday.

World War II veteran Bob Benfield says he wants to see the B-17 bomber because he flew 20 bombing missions on one as a tail gunner more than 60 years ago. The 91-year-old says he was scared to death in bombing runs over France and Germany, but at least he got paid.
