Together the Saints Can

KSCB News - February 15, 2010 12:00 am

Playing without point guard Tony Smith who quit the team Thursday, the Saints had a point to prove Saturday in Concordia. They wanted to prove they could win without their ultra talented point guard. They shouted ‘together’ each time they huddled at Bryant Gymnasium Saturday, and backed up their bard with a 72-67 win to move to 9-4 in the Jayhawk West and 20-7 overall. Seward head coach Bryan Zollinger was impressed. “These guys here tonight played with unbelievable toughness and passion,” Zollinger said after improving to 6-1 against Cloud County. “We made some mistakes, but that’s the kind of toughness and passion we’ve been looking for.” Seward led 28-27 at halftime but trailed 42-33 early in the second half before going on a 16-5 run to take a two point lead (49-47) with 8:40 remaining. They would never trail again as they buried 25-30 free throws during the second half. Donte McCarter scored 23 buoyed by his 16-19 shooting at the free throw line. Latiq Agard led the Saints with 20 points while Jon Tassin added 13 points and six rebounds. The Saints won despite Marcus James fouling out and playing less than 10 minutes due to foul trouble. The Thunderbirds lose their homecoming game and fall to 13-12 overall and 6-6 in the Jayhawk West. Pratt lost so the Saints are a game and a half in front of the Beavers for third in the Jayhawk West. Seward hosts Dodge City Saturday for homecoming on B107.5 and kscbnews.net.
