Space Still Available At SCCC/ATS Science Camps

KSCB News - May 18, 2014 5:25 pm

There’s still time for high school students to register for two science academies offered this summer at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School.

The four-day residential camps will run concurrently June 2-5, and students have the option of exploring sustainable agriculture or food science and safety.

Food Science Summer Academy gives students a behind-the-scene look at the foods we eat, said Chris Guyer, SCCC/ATS Food Science and Safety program specialist. Students can get hands-on experience and learn about the science of foods, make yogurt, test foods visit the labs of a local food processor and more.

In addition to Guyer, Pamela Hatesohl, research assistant and instructor at the Food Science Institute, Kansas State University, will assist with the camp.

Sustainable Agriculture Academy introduces students to agricultural practices that focus on the long-term view. Topics include enhancement of environmental quality and the resource base on which agriculture depends, basic human food and fiber needs, economic viability, and quality of life for farmers and society, said Erin Russell, SCCC/ATS Sustainable Agriculture Resources program specialist. Students will learn techniques and practices that are currently being utilized to assist in this endeavor.

In addition to their focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills, organizers said, “the camp will be fun.” Students will live in the dorms.

Cost for either camp is $130. Limited financial assistance may be available.
