Southwest Symphony Society presents Christmas Concert on Dec. 10

The public is invited to Southwest Symphony Society’s holiday concert, “A Concert You Can’t Refuse” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Showcase Theater at Seward County Committee College. Admission is a free-will donation at the door and refreshments will be served.

“Our local musicians volunteer their time and talents,” said Conductor Josiah Smiddy, “and they have been working several months now on putting together a holiday concert that will get you in the mood for the season. This year we are mixing it up and adding in some movie show tunes along with the Christmas music.” Smiddy has been serving as the conductor for the Southwest Symphony orchestra since August 2017.

“I think our conductor has done a great job of mixing classical and contemporary music to provide some outstanding concerts,” said Kay Burtzloff, Southwest Symphony Society president. “I think people are often surprised at the depth of talent we have in our community.”

The concert will feature the following selections:
· Sleigh Ride – Leroy Anderson
· Carmina Burana – Carl Orff
· Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy – Pytor Tchaikovsky
· Waltz of the Flowers – Pytor Tchaikovsky
· The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Paul Dukas
· The Polar Express – Alan Silvestri
· The Godfather – Nino Rota
· Forrest Gump – Alan Silvestri
· Dreams of Fireflies – Paul O’Neill

Concert personnel include: Violins – Bethany Adams, Rebekah Strand, Blinda Massa; Violas – Alison Smiddy, Nancy Allen; Cello – Matthew Rice; Oboe – Alisa Henderson; Flute – Rika Ford; Clarinet – Shelly Rowson; Saxophones – Liz Heath, Derrick Kraft; French Horn – Sherry Moentmann; Trumpet – Chris Ford; Flugelhorn – Liz Heath; Trombones – Kylee Hammel, Orlando Guereca; Tuba – Alex Goossen; and Percussion – Rosemarie Rowson.
