SCCC/ATS Medical Labratory Technicians Recieve Scholarships

Kristen Wheeler, a current second-year Medical Laboratory Technician student at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School and Manhattan Area Technical College was awarded The Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Student Scholarship and earned the Kansas Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (KSCLS) Outstanding Student Award.
Legacy scholarships of $1,000 each are available to 50 MLT students who are in their final year of a NAACLS-accredited medical laboratory technician program.

. During her academic course for the MLT program, Wheeler of Westmoreland has earned a 4.0 grade point average. She is currently completing her advanced clinical practicum rotation and will complete the program requirements in August.

Tiana Stebens, currently a second year Medical Laboratory Technician student at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School, Liberal, Kansas, was awarded The Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Legacy Student Scholarship.

Legacy scholarships of $2,000 each are available to ten students who are children, grandchildren, or siblings of clinical laboratory professionals who continue their family legacy by pursuing associate’s or bachelor’s degrees in NAACLS-accredited medical laboratory technician (MLT) or medical laboratory scientist (MLS) programs.

Stebens, who will complete the MLT program requirements in August, will be employed by Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

Her grandfather, Jerry Horton, was a medical laboratory scientist (MLS). He earned a bachelor’s in general science from Fort Hays State University. He then became a MLS working at Kearny County Hospital from 1975-1985. He also served as the hospital administrator during that time.

Steben’s previous academic course work includes a bachelor’s of science degree in radiological technology. Tiana is employed both in the clinical laboratory and the radiology department and she has elected to seek formal training in medical laboratory science.

During the completion of the radiological technology program, Tiana was the health senator for the student government association at Fort Hays State University. She also demonstrated leadership skills as the president of the Association of Radiological Technology Students. Tiana is currently the publicity committee chairperson for the Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists

Each year the Kansas Society for Clinical Laboratory Science awards a minimum of four $500 scholarships to current medical laboratory technician (MLT) and medical laboratory science (MLS) students. At the recent annual continuing education meeting, Noemi Navaratte, a Medical Laboratory Technician student at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School, was awarded one of the scholarships.

Navarrate of Deerfield is a current second-year MLT student and is completing her advanced clinical practicum rotation. Upon completion of the MLT program requirements in August, she will seek employment in southwest Kansas.
