SCCC Welcomes Students Back to Campus

Joe Denoyer - August 22, 2018 12:12 pm

Seward County Community College celebrated the start of the 2018-19 academic year with Welcome Day on Monday.

Night classes began on Monday with day classes starting on Tuesday. Activity on campus began Saturday when students moved into the dorms, TRiO/Student Support Services held its “Jump Start” orientation for its students and business offices and the Saints Bookstore opened with special extended hours. New students, families, and friends of the college finished off the day with a student/family/community barbeque at the courtyard of the dorms.

Things were busy on the campuses Monday. Returning students wrapped up last-minute checks on classes and financial aid. New students headed to the gym for Welcome Day games and exercises to get acquainted with the campus, administration and each other.

SCCC President Ken Trzaska welcomed the new students and challenged them with several points, including advice to “tell your truth” and “give five minutes of your time each day to help someone you do not know.”

Students were acquainted with one other through games and activities, breaking down into several groups based on commonalities such as month of birth, names, place of birth, and number of siblings.

After meeting with their advisors, the students ended Welcome Day with dinner and an opportunity to meet with more than two dozen academic and student groups including Athletic Training, Band, Choir, Student Government Association, International Student Organization, the Crusader student news, Student Veterans, and Phi Theta Kappa.
