Saints Save Best for Last

KSCB News - March 3, 2010 12:00 am

The Seward County Saints won the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament at the Green House Tuesday night 85-66 over Kansas City. Latiq Agard poured in 29 points and grabbed six rebound while Marky Nolen added 21 points and eight rebounds. Seward hit 80 percent (24-30) of their free throws in the win. The Saints (23-8) face Cowley for the third consecutive year at Wichita Saturday night at 5 PM on B107.5 and kscbnews.net. Last year Cowley beat Seward in the quarterfinals in overtime one year after SCCC beat Cowley in the Region 6 title game. The rematch was in doubt for most of the night at the Tigers struggled with Pratt before winning 70-69 in Ark City. The Kansas City Blue Devils invaded the Green House for the second consecutive year and jumped out on the Saints 12-1 early on. The Saints put together a 26-8 run to lead 27-20 before leading 33-28 at halftime. Kansas City began strongly in the second half as well building a 47-42 lead seven minutes into the second half. Seward took a 53-52 lead with 9:20 to play and never trailed again. Seward head coach Bryan Zollinger sent a chase out on KCK’s top shooter Scott Fruehling who hit five three pointers and that shut down the Blue Devil offense for the rest of the night. Zollinger says the Saints may have been too ready to play. “The guys may have been a little too tight and a little too ready to go,” Zollinger said after improving to 10-2 in the post season at Seward. “You have to have some guts to go out and prove yourself under that kind of pressure.” The Saints have won five straight first round games.
