Russia Bans Pork From Seaboard’s Guymon Plant

KSCB News - August 3, 2010 12:00 am

Russia has banned all pork from the Seaboard Foods plant in Guymon, according to a British news source.

MeatTradeNewsDaily.com is reporting that the country of Russia has banned pork from two US packing plants in addition to Seaboard of Guymon. The website says Russia has banned pork from the Smithfield plants in Clinton and Tar Heel, N.C. effective August 2. The plant in Tar Heel is the largest pork plant in the world. According to the website, the USDA says no reason has been given for the halted shipments.

“USDA also reports that Russia has banned pork from the Seaboard Foods plant in Guymon, Okla. retroactive to July 10,” the website said.

Since first learning about this story last week, The Guymon Daily Herald has been unable to independently confirm from any source that the pork has been banned in Russia.

The Guymon Daily Herald has contacted USDA offices, both locally and in Washington, D.C. without any confirmation. The Daily Herald has also spoken with local plant officials in addition to the corporate Seaboard offices. Both local officials and corporate officials knew nothing of the situation initially.

The Director of Marketing at Seaboard’s home office told The Guymon Daily Herald late Monday afternoon that he could not provide a statement regarding the Russian export ban.
