Robertson will Relive First Pitch Thursday Night

KSCB News - June 2, 2009 12:00 am

The man who fired the first pitch in Liberal BJ history on June 4, 1955 at the Fairgrounds will deliver the ceremonial first pitch on June 4, 2009 at Brent Gould Field. Jerry Robertson who lives in Darrouzett, Texas will be in Liberal for the Thursday night opener against the El Dorado Broncos. Game time is set for 7:00 PM. Robertson pitched 17 innings in a game against Dodge City that summer. He said in an interview with KSCB that the fields weren’t well manicured then and the bus rides throught the Ban Johnson league weren’t comfortable. He said there was a lot of excitement around the BJ’s getting started in 1955. Robertson indicated the big rivalry in 1955 was Garden City and Liberal. Robertson was invited back in 2004 as well but Mother Nature wouldn’t allow Robertson to toss out a first pitch. The BJ’s begin their 55th summer of baseball Thursday night.
