KSCB News - July 20, 2009 12:00 am

Random gunfire has killed an attorney for the Kansas Department of Education as she drove home after attending a show at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City.

On Saturday, police identified the victim as 45-year-old Deanna Lieber of Lawrence, Kan. She was driving on U.S. 71 when she was struck late Friday night about two miles away from the outdoor theater. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said her 13-year-old daughter in the passenger seat, and her mother-in-law was in the back seat.

Board member Sue Storm called the killing “just awful.” Lieber was the department’s general counsel.

Police are asking the public to call with tips.
