Emporia – Liberal High School’s 2023 Girls Golf season came to an end on Monday afternoon at the KSHSAA 6A State Girls Golf Tournament at Emporia Municipal Golf Course, as Senior Bret Lyon shot a 114.

The day started at 9 am with the temperature about 42 degrees with a 10 mph North wind … so it felt more like 38 degrees! By the time temperatures climbed to a more comfortable range, the cold conditions had already taken their toll on Lyon. She finished with a 114 on the par-71 layout, finishing 78th out or 88 total entries.

“We knew it was going to be difficult for Bret to make it to the second day,” Coach Bert Luallen stated, “but I’m so proud of the way she hung in there under tough conditions and fought to the end. She has improved so much over last season. I can’t describe how proud I am of her.”
This was the second consecutive year the Lady Redskins have qualified a golfer to State under Luallen’s short two-year tenure as Head Coach. “I’m hopeful that the success the girls have had over these past two seasons will help us instill a greater interest in the sport, so that we can have larger and better teams going forward. We will begin looking for new talent immediately.”
