Liberal City Commission Meets

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday night at 6:30pm in the City Commission Chambers for their regularly scheduled meeting. At the start of the Commission meeting, the Commission honored retiring employee Steve Guerrero for 27 years of service. Steve headed up the Building Inspection and Code Enforcement Departments for many years. In the Items from citizens portion of the meeting, commissioners, heard from Tony Whisnant requesting the city look into the possibility of widening the sidewalks at Blue Bonnet Park, and also received an update from Jack Taylor on the projects selected by KDOT for the new Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Highway 54 was awarded two projects, one of which includes 10 miles of 4 lanes on 54. In Items from Groups the City Commission, heard from SWAT, Southwest Aquatics Team, on the upcoming swim meet. The city will work with the team, to reach an equitable plan agreeable to both party’s. On the agenda, the Commission heard from Lobbyist John Pinegar as a representative of the Southwest Kansas Coalition. He gave an update on the 2011 Legislative Session and the impact for Southwest Kansas. Commissioners also approved the Levying of the 1% sales tax which the voters approved in November. This is a continuation of the current 1% sales tax. Also approved were the 2011 fee structures, an Airport engineering agreement with H.W. Lochner for Runway 4?22 improvements, and a reappointment of Jay Bahtka to the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board. The commission also approved the purchase of a packer for the Water Department and awarded the bid for the construction of a segment of Purdue Street to J $ R Sand. The next regular meeting of the Liberal City Commission is set for June 28th, 2011
