LHS Girls Place Fifth at Great Bend

The Lady Redskins finished 5th Place in the Great Bend Invitational Tennis Tournament on Saturday battling Mother Nature’s rain and much stiffer competition. Particpating teams included Great Bend, Ellinwood, Dodge City, Maize South, Garden City, Nickerson, and Wakeeney. Our girls got the opportunity to play against some real talent today, so our weaknesses were really exposed. This opens up the opportunity for learning and growth this coming week. The Lady Redskins travel to Dodge City on Thursday and Garden City on Saturday.

Individual results:

#1 Singles–Susan Nguyen went 3-1 finishing 3rd Place. She defeated Nickerson’s Baye Harper 7-1, then defeated Dodge City’s Courtney McDaniel 7-3. In her next match, Susan found herself down 0-5 to the eventual tournament champion Baily Schartz from Ellinwood. Susan fought back to tie the score 5-5 before losing 7-5. She defeated Maize’ Julie Frenz 7-2 to take 3rd Place.

#2 Singles–Valerie Rito went 2-2 finishing 5th Place. Valerie’s first two matches were decided by one tie-breaking point. She defeated Nickerson’s Kylie Combs 7-6 (7-5 in a tie-breaker), then lost to Dodge City’s Danielle Jones 6-7 ( 7-5 in a tie-breaker). Valerie lost to Ellinwood’s Gentry McLeland, then bounced back to defeat Olivia Jorgensen from Maize South to finish 5th Place.

#1 Doubles–Caitlin Workman and Kathy Nguyen went 0-4 finishing 8th Place. They lost to Nickerson’s Nisly/Stucky 2-7, they lost to Dodge City’s Newton/Schubert 1-7, they lost to Ellinwood’s Miller/Beckwith 1-7, and lost to Wakeeney’s Fabrizius/Flax 1-7 to take 8th Place.

#2 Doubles–Shelby Hay and Kassandra Rosales went 0-4 finishing 8th Place. They lost to Nickerson’s Barber/Henke 0-7, they lost to Dodge City’s Schubert/Unruh 0-7, they lost to Ellinwood’s Robl/Thomas 1-7, then lost to Garden City’s Damien/Victor 4-7 to take 8th Place.
