KDOT Finalizes Options for U.S. 54 Expansion in Seward County

by Yazmin Moreno KDOT

LIBERAL – After two years of gathering information from the public and reviewing design options, the Kansas Department of Transportation will move forward with the following intersection and corridor improvements on the U.S. 54 expansion project from U.S. 54/U.S. 83 intersection to Tucker Road:

The U.S. 54/U.S. 83 intersection will be relocated. An upgraded signalized intersection will be built where U.S. 54 remains on its existing alignment and where U.S. 83 will be realigned. Realigning U.S. 83 will improve the angle of the intersection.
U.S. 54 will remain on the existing alignment and then separate (before 8th Street) into a four-lane expressway directed around Garrettsville to the southeast. The expressway will reconnect with the existing four-lane highway.

As the design process advances, We will continue to:

Coordinate directly with the property owners affected by this project,
Optimize private driveway and local road connectivity in coordination with business owners, the City of Liberal and Seward County,
Continue to share project information and anticipated construction timelines.

This project has not yet been funded for construction. Right-of-way acquisition and construction schedules depend on project approvals and inclusion within the IKE Construction Pipeline. Once selected for the IKE Construction Pipeline, a construction timeline will be provided.

The U.S. 54 corridor carries approximately 7,000 vehicles daily, including 2,000 trucks. To help meet that demand, this project will tie into the recently completed U.S. 54 expansion from Tucker Road to County Road O. This work aims to enhance safety, reduce congestion and support economic growth in the region.
