Kansas Unemployment Remains At 6.3% In May

KSCB News - June 18, 2010 12:00 am

A new report says the Kansas unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.3% in May, but state officials still saw positive economic signs.

The Kansas Department of Labor reported the figure Friday. It also said the state saw modest job growth from April to May.

Kansas added about 11,000 jobs over the month. The department acknowledged that some of the gain was due to normal seasonal hiring trends.

But those trends don’t explain roughly 5,000 of the new jobs, and Gov. Mark Parkinson said the numbers show Kansas is slowly emerging from the recession.

The unemployment rate in May also was significantly better than the 7% jobless rate in May 2009.
