Hugoton Man Charged With First-Degree Murder In Mother’s Death

Police responded to a 911 call early Saturday morning at the home of Lorenza Maestas, 100 S. Jackson, in Hugoton.

Michael Maestas Jr., 25, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his mother, Lorenza Maestas.

At 5:31 a.m. Saturday, the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a man who identified himself as Michael Maestas and said he had stabbed his mother. Officers arrived at the scene seven minutes later.

Lorenza Maestas, 52, was pronounced dead at her home, 100 S. Jackson, according to a report from the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Maestas Jr. was taken into custody and remains in jail on a $1 million bond set Monday in Stevens County District Court in front of District Magistrate Judge Paula Sosa. James Kuharic of Hugoton was appointed as his attorney. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10.
