On June 25, 2021, officers with the Hugoton Police Department were dispatched to the report of a sexual assault. During the investigation, officers learned that a five year old Hugoton male had been sexually assaulted by 67 year old Juan “Johnny” Gonzales, also of Hugoton. Mr. Gonzales was subsequently arrested and an affidavit has been presented to the County Attorney for formal charges.
“The reporting of sexual abuse can bring perpetrators to justice, prevent future assaults, and connect survivors to critical resources,” stated Hugoton Police Chief Courtney Leslie. “We should be doing everything in our power to remove barriers that prevent victims from reporting their abuse.” As these cases move forward, the Hugoton Police Department encourages anyone with information to contact investigators at (620) 544-4959.
*The person(s) involved has not yet been convicted of a crime, and are presumed innocent. The presumption of innocence shall continue until such time that the person(s) accused may be found guilty by the court of law.*
