Heat Taking Toll On Kansas Crops

KSCB News - July 26, 2011 8:05 am

Triple-digit temperatures and the
continuing lack of moisture are taking a rising toll on Kansas
crops.
Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service on Monday issued a weekly
crop update showing rapidly declining conditions for the state’s
major crops.
The agency now rates 34 percent of the Kansas corn crop in poor
to very poor condition. About 32 percent is in fair shape with just
29 percent rated as good and 5 percent as excellent.
Sorghum crops are also hurting, with 36 percent rated in poor to
very poor condition. About 33 percent of the soybeans are also rate
poor to very poor.
The deteriorating conditions show up across multiple indicators.
Topsoil and subsoil moisture is short across most of the state,
while Kansas range and pasture conditions are getting worse.
