Headstone Added To Negro Leaguers Grave In Topeka

KSCB News - June 20, 2011 7:59 am

A former Negro Leagues player has gotten a
headstone after being buried in an unmarked grave for more than 30
years.
About 40 family friends and
baseball fans gathered over the weekend at Topeka’s Mount Hope
Cemetery to pay tribute to Carroll Ray "Dink" Mothell.
The Topeka native is remembered by baseball historians as one of
the most versatile players in history. He played 15 seasons in the
Negro Leagues starting in 1920. Most of the time was spent with the
Kansas City Monarchs.
The Society for American Baseball Research has set out to honor
former players who died in anonymity. Mothell’s headstone marks the
22nd installed since the group started the effort in 2004.
