AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) –

Guymon native and Oklahoma State Board of Agriculture member Joe Mayer died on Sunday in Amarillo at age 68.

Mayer suffered a heart attack on Saturday, and was taken to a hospital until his death.

He was a recent appointee to the board, having served in his first meeting on May 8.

Mayer also served on numerous boards and received many awards during his lifetime, including the Oklahoma Governor’s Outstanding Achievement in Agriculture Award.

His public service was largely dedicated to agriculture, including service on the USDA Farm Services Association Committee under Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin expressed her condolences at Mayer’s passing.

” He once said his dedication to his community was how he was raised to try to make the world a better place for having been here,” said Governor Fallin. “He will be missed.”

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne, and three children, Paul, Katie and Margie, who all work for the family farm and ranch business.
