Grass Fire Destroys Vacant Home Near Yarbrough

Joe Denoyer - April 13, 2023 10:05 am

Area Firefighters Wednesday night responded to a 911 call of a grass fire just north of Yarbrough schools in Texas County. The 10:30pm fire occurred during extremely high wind and dry conditions which fueled the fire to spread into nearby vacant homes.
Yarbrough, Hough, and Morton Co. Kansas fire units arrived first to find the grass fire spreading and consuming 1 mobile home completely. A second home just to the west received heat damage from the fire. “Firefighters had to quickly protect the areas north of the moving fire from which 2 additional occupied homes were saved”, said Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley. Additional fire units from Guymon, Goodwell, Texhoma, and Hooker responded. It took Firefighter nearly an hour to contain and control the fire. The 1 mobile home involved was destroyed with approximately 2 acres of grass and property burned. The cause of the fire is undetermined currently.
Firefighters at the time of the fire had +35mph winds from the southwest, above average temperatures for this time of night, and humidity levels near 20%. All of Texas County is still under an active Burn Ban and citizens are advised to take extreme caution.
