Fire Damages Out Buildings At Old Liberal Iron and Metal:UPDATE

The Liberal Fire Department responded to a structure fire Monday evening, August 15, 2011, at 140 S Kansas Avenue. The fire was reported at 9:24 p.m.

Initial 911 calls indicated that the fire was located at the top of the Perryton Equity Grain Elevators. First arriving units reported heavy flames showing from a metal building located southeast of the elevators. The building is located on the old Liberal Iron and Metal property and is controlled/operated now by the City of Liberal as a storage facility. Firefighters attacked the fire initially from the exterior and were able contain it to the building, its contents, and surrounding grass. No civilian or firefighter injuries are reported in this incident. However, the fire did result major damage to the structure and destruction of several of the items stored in the building. Firefighters remained on scene until 12:03 am extinguishing hot spots and conducting an on-scene investigation. Fire Investigators returned to the scene this morning to continue with the investigation. The Liberal Fire Department responded to the incident with 21 firefighters, two engines, one aerial platform truck, and two light support vehicles. The Liberal Police Department and Seward County EMS responded to the incident as well.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. Anyone with information about this fire is encouraged to contact the Liberal Fire Department at 620-626-0128.

A fire Monday evening caused damage to an out building and its contents on property owned by the City of Liberal. Fire investigators were working the scene early Tuesday morning, and would have more information for KSCB News as it becomes available.
