– Warmer temperatures and mostly dry
conditions have allowed Kansas farmers to begin planting corn while
the winter wheat matures.
In its weekly crop update, Kansas Agricultural Statistics
Service reported Monday that 1 percent of the corn has been
planted. The average for this time of year is about 3 percent.
The agency also says 94 percent of the winter wheat crop has now
broken dormancy.
The wheat’s condition is rated 12 percent excellent, 57 percent
good and 25 percent fair. Only 6 percent is rated poor to very
poor.
