Beaver Aims to Restore Order

KSCB News - August 21, 2009 12:00 am

The Beaver Dusters motto has been “We Believe” under 15th year head coach Mike McVay. But they are adding to that motto this year. The Dusters want to “Restore Order” after back-to-back 2-8 seasons. Senior tailback and linebacker Gus Skaggs says he’s looking for the Dusters to turn things around this year. “The last couple of years we’ve been on a downfall,” Skaggs said. “People are used to the usual Beaver Duster spirit coming out and whipping up on people. We just haven’t followed through with that lately. It’s time to restore the order.”

Senior tight end and defensive end Daniel Reed knows the past two years haven’t been up to par. “We haven’t lived up to their (Beaver fans’) standards the past couple of years. Hopefully this year we can turn it all around. We’ve come together this offseason. We should do a lot better this season.”

The Dusters return nine starters on both sides of the ball. McVay says experience will help. “They’ve not only started last year but they were the starters the previous year too,” McVay said. “They’ve grown up in the system and have a lot of playing experience under their belt. We’re hoping that translates into more wins for us this year.”

Senior offensive lineman and lineback Jordan Estalla says he’ll take the bull by the horns. “In certain situations you’ll see certain people freak out,” Estalla said. “But when you see it you have to step up and go to the point. When someone’s out there and does something wrong, you’ve got to show them who’s the leader and follow up.”

The Dusters also return senior wb/wr/s Jacob Bridwell, senior wr/wb/de Zac Rife, junior qb/db Samuel Becker, junior Michael Mathis, and junior fb/lb Jeremiah Campbell. Senior center Will Parker is recovering from injury. Pierce says the line will be everything but big. “We don’t have much size but we have a lot of experience and we have been working together,” Pierce said. “Speed, agility, and heart…we’ve got it all.”

McVay’s teams have made it to the playoffs in 11 of his 14 years as head coach. Duster fans hope Beaver restores the order in 2009. The Dusters will be featured during the Sportsguys Friday morning on Talkradio 1270 and kscb.net.
