Barnett Stops in Liberal as Part of His House Call Tour

KSCB News - June 3, 2010 12:00 am

Dr. Jim Barnett who is a state senator from Emporia, and who was the Republican nominee for Governor of Kansas in 2006 was in Liberal on Wednesday as a part of his House Call Tour. Barnett is a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in the Big First District.

Barnett began his political career in 1991 when he was elected to the Emporia Board of Education. Barnett served on the board for eight years, and was the board president for four of those years. In 2000, Barnett was then elected to the Kansas State Senate.

Barnett told KSCB News that agriculture, health care, and education are three of the most pressing issues the state of Kansas is facing right now and that they are his two primary focuses with his school board experience and the fact that he is a medical doctor as well.

Barnett would like to see the new health care law repealed, but said it may not be realistic since the Republicans would have to do more then just take back over the House, but also get a super majority. Barnett said if they aren’t able to get a super majority that the Republicans would instead have to block funding for the new health care law.

Barnett also responded to charges from opponent Tim Huelskamp who has recently been critical of Barnett stating that he introduced a similar health care plan for Kansas back in 2007. Barnett said that he absolutely has never supported anything like President Obama’s health care plan, and to state that he has is dishonest.

In other issues, Barnett has a 100% pro-life voting record and does not support same-sex marriage.

Recent polls show Barnett and Huelskamp as the front runners, with Barnett having a slight advantage. Barnett said despite being one of the front runners, that he is running his campaign like he is trailing.

KSCB’s full interview with Barnett will air on Friday, June 11, on Live from Broadcast Square at 9 a.m. on Talkradio 1270.
