Auditions For SCCC/ATS Production Of “Picnic” Set

KSCB News - August 20, 2013 10:11 am

Auditions for the fall production of “Picnic” at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School is at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27th and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28 in the Showcase Theatre on campus, 1801 N. Kansas.
The Drama Department will supply the materials for the audition.
In 1953, “Picnic,” by William Inge, opened at The Music Box Theatre in New York City. This is a Pulitzer Prize winning play by Kansas playwright William Inge and is done in celebration of the observance of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Not only did it win him a Pulitzer Prize, but The Drama Critic Circle Award, The Outer Circle Award, and The Theatre Club Award. In 1956, Columbia Pictures released the film version of “Picnic” directed by Joshua Logan and starring William Holden, Kim Novak and Rosalind Russell. It enjoyed a successful revival run on Broadway last year at the legendary Round-About Theatre starring Ellen Burstyn, Maggie Grace (of Lost fame), and Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl).
“Picnic” is a charming and uplifting and heartbreaking story of one life-changing day in the lives of two households in a small Kansas town in the early 1950s. Madge is coming of age and wonders if there is more to life than being a pretty girl destined to marry the first acceptable man who asks. Then a drifter named Hal arrives and his presence has a seismic effect on Madge and the Owens’ extended family. A whirlwind of passion and longing makes this a summer picnic like no other.
