Monday afternoon, Guymon Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Guymon Walmart located at 2402 N. Hwy 64.
“On Firefighters arrival, no reports of smoke or fire were present, but the sounding of the building fire alarm was going off”, said Guymon Fire Marshal Jason Bond. A fast search found that a section of fire sprinkler pipe had burst due to recent freezing conditions.
This is not an unusual event for buildings that have sprinkler systems that get exposed to freezing weather. Water in the lines freezes which causes swelling of the pipes, then burst under continuous pressure. The Guymon Fire Department each year responds to similar calls which occur often at local motels, schools, medical facilities, churches, etc. This specific break at Walmart was near the garden section and did not affect customers or associates. At no time was there a risk to anyone in the building. Walmart remained open with special Fire Watch guidelines in place by the Fire Marshal Office. Repairs are expected within the next 24 hours.
