Community Thanksgiving meal set for Monday, Nov. 24

The public is invited to a Community Thanksgiving meal on Monday, Nov. 24, at the Girl Scout Building in Light Park, Liberal. Serving time will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The meal is free but reservations must be made by Nov. 21 by calling or texting 620-566-8026. A limited number of to-go meals also will be available.

The meal is being sponsored by the Liberal Area Coalition for Families, Girl Scout Troop 60129, and the High Plains Heritage Foundation. Anyone interested in donating food or volunteering to work can also call 620-566-8026. Anyone interested in donating funds can contact Kay Burtzloff, 620-629-0203, or Sarah Foreman, 620-655-2061.

“When we found out that the Senior Center was not planning on hosting a public Thanksgiving meal and Stepping Stone Shelter cannot host a public Thanksgiving meal since it is shut down for renovations, we decided to plan one,” Burtzloff said. “We know that we had individuals and families who came to those dinners in the past as their only Thanksgiving meal. With the SNAP uncertainties and rising prices, we wanted to make sure we were still taking care of our community.”

Burtzloff added, “We are deeply grateful for our community partners who stepped up to join us and we’ve already had a number of people and groups volunteering to help.”

The menu will include all the traditional Thanksgiving favorites, turkey, stuffing and gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and a variety of desserts. Water, coffee and tea will also be served.
