This Week at SCCC

LIBERAL, Kan.  —Seward County Community College Saints athletes can be seen all over town as the various teams put in volunteer hours for multiple causes. Men’s basketball team members met students at Prairie View Elementary School for “High 5 Friday” Sept. 19, a mood-booster and high point for local children. The following night, both men and women’s basketball players helped staff the 31st annual SCCC Foundation Party Auction. Women’s team members provided free, on-site child care for auction attendees, while the men’s team members offered muscle power for auction winners who needed a hand getting their purchases removed from the Seward County Activity Center and loaded into vehicles.
The Liberal Area Chamber of Commerce annual Duck Race Saturday, Sept. 27, will bring more athletes out to help with setup and event staffing.
“We’re committed to being part of our community,” said Associate Vice President for Athletics Cody Cole. “It’s a great way to build team spirit among our student athletes, and to bring out our fans when we’re competing.”
Public invited to reception honoring longtime trustee Ron Oliver
Join Seward County Community College from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 5 (a Sunday), as we host a reception in honor of longtime trustee Ron Oliver. For 34 years, Oliver has served as a trustee at SCCC, spending most of that time as board chairman. At the conclusion of his term in December, Oliver will retire from his role.
“It’s almost impossible to put into words what Ron has achieved on behalf of the college and the communities we serve during his years on the board,” said SCCC President Brad Bennett. “We will miss his presence on the board. He sets the bar for us all in his dedication to SCCC and to the people, our students, our faculty and staff, our communities.”
The reception, in the second-story SW229 rooms above the cafeteria entrance in the Student Union, is open to the public.

Explore low- or no-cost four year degrees with Newman University partnership
SCCC graduates can now earn four-year degrees at low- or no-cost, thanks to a unique partnership with Newman University. All students who have or will earn an associate’s degree from SCCC automatically qualify for a $20,000 scholarship, as well as a matching Pell Grant award.
Bachelor’s degrees offered by Newman for this partnership include agriculture technology management, applied artificial intelligence, business, certified financial planning, computer science, data science, game development, nursing, and teaching.
Once students have completed their associate’s degree, they will be seamlessly transitioned into a student of Newman University where they can complete the remainder of their bachelor’s degree. All of this is done through the SCCC campus, affording students to convenience of remaining local while achieving their educational goals. It is possible for a student to attend for as little $750 per year.
A Newman University recruiter will be on the SCCC campus one day each week throughout fall semester. Planned dates include: Sept. 29, October 8, 15, 20 and 27; Nov. 3, 10, and 17; and Dec. 1.
To learn more about this opportunity, stop in the Hobble Academic Building between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the planned dates and follow the signs to the Newman University recruiting desk. For more information, visit the scccnewman.com website.
From fundraisers to morning prayer gathering, clubs gain momentum
Campus clubs are in full swing at Seward County Community College, with something for everyone. Through the month of September, campus was busy with events sponsored by clubs and recruiting activities designed to help students connect with friends and mentors.
  • Student-led Bible study members showed up early Tuesday morning for the annual “See You At The Pole” prayer meeting. Following a brief prayer circle at the main campus flagpole, participants enjoyed breakfast foods and fellowship. SCCC currently hosts the Detours student group on Thursday evenings, serving dessert and discussion about Bible passages. The off-campus group “Campus Fellowship” sponsored an outdoor praise and worship session in the SCCC Amphitheater Sept. 17.
  • SCCC Cosmetology students raffled off a basket of must-have products on Facebook Live on Sept. 19. Proceeds from the raffle are designated to help students attend the two-day “Premiere San Antonio” conference, billed as “the ultimate beauty experience.” The raffle offered gift certificates for free services at the SCCC salon, a photography package donated by King Luxe Photography of Liberal, and various beauty products. Winners in the drawing were Jeff Quist, Susie Estrada, Estela Trejo, Lena Pike, Veronica Blanco, Jackie Acosta, Frania Murillo, Emmanuel Borunda, and main prize winner Martha Giesbracht, who got a basket of self-care products valued at $430.
  • Other clubs currently recruiting members include the SCCC Collegiate Quiz Bowl Team, the Anime Club, Pathways STEM Club, and HALO (Hispanic American Leadership Organization).
