PLAINS – Wanda Jean Fox, age 96, passed away early Monday morning, September 8, 2025, at the Wheatridge Park Care Center, Liberal, Kansas.
She was born January 11, 1929, at Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Gladys (Pierson) Smid. As a young girl, she attended her early years of school in Wichita and then later moving to Liberal attending Garfield Grade School for several years before moving back to Wichita. A longtime resident of Plains, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Plains Methodist Church and the Baker Art Center. She enjoyed painting, sewing, quilting, pottery, making dolls, baking and decorating wedding cakes, and spending time with her family and friends.
On November 1, 1947, she married Guy Vincent Fox at Tucumcari, New Mexico. He precedes her in death on January 8, 1995.
She is survived by her son Ron of rural Plains; a brother, Jim Smid of Portales, New Mexico; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Gerald, Jack, and Joe Smid; and two sisters, Arlene Wright and Merle Wilkerson.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2025, at the Plains Cemetery, Plains. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade, Kansas.
