A’s Shock Liberal for Second Straight Night

For the second consecutive evening, Liberal led in the last inning with one out and the bases empty and lost the game. The last place Dodge City A’s scored three in the ninth to send the shell shocked BJ’s home with another loss 8-7 at Cavalier Field in Dodge City Sunday night. Dodge City’s Jeremy Gum doubled off the wall in right to drive home the tying run and winning runs.

Liberal took a 4-2 lead in the third after RBI basehits by Mark Gomez, Kyle Borden, and Richard Bohlken before a two RBI hit from Mike McArthy. The BJ’s built a lead of 5-3 when Borden hit a line drive over the left center field wall for his fifth of the season. Dodge tied the game in the sixth. The Bee Jays got a clutch two out two RBI triple from Gomez in the eighth to give Liberal a 7-5 lead which would last until the ninth.

Kelby Tomlinson was 3-5 with four stolen bases. McArthy was 3-3 with two RBI’s and Kyle Borden was 3-5 with an RBI.

Will Alvis pitched six innings allowing five runs with four strikeouts and no walks. Parker Markel worked two scoreless innings before Nick Youpel worked two thirds of an inning for the loss and Travis Parker faced Gum.

Liberal is 24-10 overall and 16-10 in the Jayhawk trailing league leading Haysville by two games. The A’s are 14-24 overall and 8-17 in the Jayhawk. Liberal hosts Hays Tuesday night at 6 p.m. with a game suspended June 16th resuming in the eighth innings with Hays leading 5-4 in the top of the inning. The regular game will follow and Southern Pioneer Electric is the buyout sponsor.
