Bee Jays Put the Heat on Haysville

KSCB News - July 11, 2010 12:00 am

It might have been Liberal’s biggest regulars season game of the year. The BJ’s proved they could win a series over one of the NBC’s top teams the Haysville Heat this weekend. Liberal won the rubber game of the series Sunday night at Brent Gould Field 9-2. Clarendon’s Edwin Arroyo broke a 2-2 tie with a two RBI double in the sixth to make it 4-2. Lubbock Christian’s Paul Gonzalez (2-0) pitched six strong innings for the win. He allowed two runs. Relievers Travis Parker (St. Louis), Nick Youpel (San Diego), and Brandon Ward-Hersee (Lamar Community College) pitched scoreless innings in the win.

Both teams scored single runs in the first and third innings. Nicholls State’s Blake Bergeron singled home Seward’s Kelby Tomlinson in the first and Concordia’s Joe Vaskas grounded out to score Tomlinson in the third. Neither team scored again until the sixth when Arroyo took advantage of a bases loaded one out situation with the two RBI double. The Bee Jays scored their fifth run on a wild pitch. Liberal plated two in the seventh. Lubbock Christian’s Mark Gomez doubled and College of Sequoias’ Joe Perez scored after the Heat throw from the outfield ended up in the BJ dugout. Texas Pan American’s Mike McArthy hit a sacrifice fly. The BJ’s added more insurance in the eighth when Arroyo doubled and Tomlinson singled him home. He stole two bases and scored on a Vaskas sacrifice fly.

The Bee Jays have won 10 of their last 11 and are 19-7 overall and 11-7 Jayhawk League. The Heat lose for the fourth time in the last five games and fall to a league leading 16-7 and 20-8 overall.

Liberal has Monday off and travels to Derby to play a double header Tuesday at 5 p.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
