An Emotional Night for Evans as the Bee Jays Roll

Brock Kappelmann - June 20, 2021 8:32 am

It was an emotional night at Brent Gould Field Saturday night.  It was Liberal native Cole Evans’ last game of the summer, and maybe his last game in a Liberal uniform.  Evans pitched 2 and 2/3 innings before head coach Eric Olmstead came and embraced his 6’5″ mountain of a young man he has coached since he was 13.  Evans left to hugs and handshakes from his team and a standing ovation from the home fans.  The game was an after thought as the Bee Jays scored 11 in the first on their way to an 18-0 win.

Two key Curve errors opened the door to 11 unearned first inning runs.  Aidan Shepardson singled home a run to make it 3-0.  Justin Harris doubled home two runs.  Quintt Landis singled home two runs.  AJ Folds lined a triple which short hopped the wall in right center.  Wyatt Grant singled home a run.  Cayde Ward launched a home run to left for his third of the season.  Two have come against the Curve.  Liberal scored five in the third.  Cayde Ward singled home a run.  Scott Anderson singled home a run.  Aidan Shepardson flicked a two RBI double to right.  Liberal scored to in the fifth as Justin Harris singled home two.

Cole Evans worked 2 and 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.  Cade Citelli pitched 2 and 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and Matt Floyd worked two shutout innings with five strikeouts.

Liberal is 10-1 and 5-0 in the Jayhawk Division of the Kansas Collegiate League.  The Curve is 7-6 and 0-5 in the Jayhawk.  Liberal plays at the Wichita Dirtbags Tuesday at 5 with the Dugout Show at 4:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
