Alfred D. Sawyer

Alfred D. Sawyer, age 89, passed away late Sunday evening, May 10, 2020, at Meade, Kansas.

He was born February 7, 1931, at Larned, Kansas, the son of Harry Arthur and Loma Celia (Skelton) Sawyer. As a young boy the family lived in several southwest Kansas towns. In 1949, he graduated from Kinsley High School, Kinsley, Kansas. After his graduation, he began working in the retail grocery business and eventually for Mayfair Grocery in California. He later began employment with the University of California as administrative support personnel until his retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church; Fargo Lodge No. 300; the Scottish Rite, achieving the 33rd degree; the York Rite; Order of the Eastern Star; served as an officer for the Kansas Grand Lodge and held many other degrees and awards as a 50 year mason; and served on the Meade County Historical Society Board of Directors for several years. He enjoyed collecting coins, studying history, woodworking, painting, working with stained glass, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

On June 8, 1952, he married Elaine Fisher at the United Methodist Church in Meade, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, David Sawyer and his wife Arlene of Greer, South Carolina, and Rick Sawyer of Henderson, Nevada; grandchildren include, Sabrina Elaine Sawyer, Clayton Cargill, Megan Cargill, Israel Hughes and his wife Christine; great-grandchildren include, Brody Cargill, Jackson McClain, Declan McClain, Justin Hughes and his wife Kaydee, Noah Hughes, Alissa Griffin, Liam Griffin, Adam Richardson, Elizabeth Hughes; and great-great grandchildren include, Lennon Hughes and Dallas Hughes.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry A. Sawyer, Jr.; and a great-grandchild, Cory Hughes Jackson.

Private family graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2020, at the Graceland Cemetery, Meade. In lieu of attending, friends may view the services via Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary’s Facebook page. A public celebration of Al’s life service will be held at a later date.

The family would welcome memorials to the Meade County Historical Society or the Kansas Masonic Foundation in care of the funeral home.
