Early voting underway Tyrone Schools in Texas County

Steven Rains - August 8, 2019 8:47 am

Early voting gets underway at 8 a.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 8, in statewide special elections in which Tyrone Public Schools is asking voters in Texas County to approve a $400,000 bond issue.

Early voting for the election ends at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9. Election day Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Special elections will be held in 17 of the state’s 77 counties. Texas County is the only Oklahoma Panhandle county having an election, according to the Oklahoma Election Board.

Early voting will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 8-9 at the election board office.

Tyrone’s bond funds will go toward classroom technology and textbooks; bleachers and lighting for the football field; and transportation, according to the district’s website.

The district wants:

  • $160,000 to acquire and/or install technology, textbooks, and/or equipment for the district to use from the proceeds of bonds maturing within 5 years,
  • $140,000 to acquire and install bleachers and lighting at the football field.
  • $100,000 to acquire Suburbans or similarly enclosed utility vehicles from the proceeds of bonds maturing within 5 years.

Tyrone Superintendent Josh Bell provided information on the impact this bond vote would have on homeowners.

The district serves a community of about 760 in Texas County, and the bond’s impact varies widely. For example if last year’s tax was $25, the first year of the bond would raise the tax to $29.62 for a $4.62 increase. At the other end of the spectrum, if last year’s tax was $1,000, the first year of the bond would raise the tax to $1,184.62 for a $184.62 annual increase.
