Fugitive In Dalhart Killing Still At Large

KSCB News - October 16, 2009 12:00 am

DALHART, Texas (AP) – A Dalhart man suspected of fatally

shooting his wife in front of their two grandchildren remained at

large as police investigate whether he fled to Mexico.

Dalhart Police Chief Tom Sanford on Friday told The Associated

Press that the search continues for 78-year-old Jose Abel Cancino,

who is named in a murder warrant.

Sanford says 63-year-old Elva Perez Cancino was fatally shot

Wednesday night outside the couple’s home after asking her spouse

to move out.

Sanford says police are “talking with family members to see

where he might be hiding out, and the possibility of him heading to

old Mexico.”

Police say the fugitive has family in the Del Rio and Midland

area, as well as Mexico.

Dalhart is a Texas Panhandle town of about 7,300 residents, near

the Oklahoma and New Mexico borders.
