KSCB News - October 8, 2009 12:00 am

Approximately 29 pounds of marijuana was seized on Sept. 27. Drug trafficking on Hwy. 54 continues to be a constant.

According to the Texas County Court Clerk’s Office, in a story from the Guymon Daily Herald, officers pulled over a 2008 Nissan Sentra bearing New Mexico plates for an unknown reason, driven by Michael J. Herrera, 21, of New Mexico.

The report goes on to say that officers gained permission to search the vehicle. Upon their search, they discovered a black coat and two folding chair cover bags in the spare tire well of the vehicle, inside of the black coat and bags were two small bricks of compressed marijuana. Herrera was transported to the Task Force Office for further questioning.

The report goes on to say that once the marijuana was removed from the coat and chair covers, they were sealed in food storage bags. The bags were surrounded by some type of odor masking liquid. The black coat bag contained six bags of marijuana, the red chair bag contained 12 bags, the last chair bag contained six bags. The approximate total of marijuana seized was 29.1 pounds. The field tests on all three bags tested positive for marijuana.

Herrera was taken to the Texas County Detention Center where he is being held on a $200,000 bond and is being charged with trafficking in an illegal drug within 2000 feet of a school or park.
