Deer Crossing

KSCB News - October 7, 2009 12:00 am

Kansas drivers are warned to be on the look out for deer on the road.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers say deer like to hide in wooded areas or near water. When you least expect it they can dart out onto the road and smash into your car.

Every year there are more than 9,000 deer car accidents in Kansas.

KHP trooper Gary Warner says its going to get bad over the next few months. It’s deer mating season which is a peak time for deer crossings.

Troopers say the best thing to do is to not swerve to try and miss the deer if it does run out in front of you. Turning the wheel quickly at a high rate of speed can cause you to lose control of the car which could cause a more serious accident.

He also warns that if there’s one deer, there are probably another one or two to follow.
