Hispanic Panel Discussion at SCCC

Joe Denoyer - September 17, 2018 10:12 am

Seward County Community College and Humanities Kansas will present “Latino Journalists, Bilingual Voices,” a panel discussion on the importance of the Spanish-language media at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19 at the Showcase Theater on the SCCC campus.

The discussion will focus on the role of the Spanish language press in reporting on immigration and immigrants and the challenges and opportunities about reporting on this subject in Kansas. The Spanish-language and bilingual media are purveyors of knowledge and serve to inform Spanish speakers.

The panelists for the discussion are Marco Alcocer, editor in chief and publisher of El Perico Informador y Parlanchin of Wichita, Enrique Franz in the station manager and radio personality of La Mexicana radio station and Janeth Vasquez, a former multimedia journalist for Univision Kansas and currently an academic advisor at SCCC.

The event is free and open to the public.

This presentation coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration of Hispanic culture and history, which runs from September 15 to October 15.

“Latino Journalists, Bilingual Voices” is part of an initiative by Humanities Kansas called Latino Stories of Kansas. Latino Stories of Kansas seeks to deepen the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the vital connections between democracy, the humanities, journalism, and an informed citizenry through the lens of Latino immigration to Kansas.

The program is part of the “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” initiative administered by the Federation of State Humanities Council and supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in partnership with the Pulitzer Prizes.
