Discarded Items Need To Be Disposed of Properly

Joe Denoyer - May 24, 2018 12:01 pm

There have been problems within the City, of discarded items such as tree branches, furniture, mattresses, appliances, and other large items, being left on curbs and in alleys without arrangements being made with the City for pick up. It is considered illegal dumping and an environmental violation to place these items out without making the proper arrangements with the City. A landowner can be ticketed or fined for these violations. The City has in the past, due to disaster or certain circumstances picked up items free of charge, but this is limited to specific items at specific times.

The correct process for the pick up of discarded items requires prior arrangements to be made with City staff and a haul away fee does apply. Residents may call (620)-626-0136 and get a quote for the cost of removal. The items will then be picked up by the City once the fee has been paid. These pick up arrangements are for items which are not allowed or are too big to be placed in 3 yard dumpsters or polycarts, such as:

Iron / Pipes

Liquids* / Oils*

Wood, Fence Post or Railroad-ties*

Large trees / construction materials*

Dirt / Concrete

Tires*

*Certain items will not be removed by the City and must be taken to the landfill directly.

Contractor hired for the job, such as tree trimmers should haul the items away and dump fees should be part of the contracted price. Large roll-off dumpsters are available for delivery and pick up for large projects.

Free dump passes are distributed once annually (usually in April) on water bills and are also available from the Solid Waste Department or Building Department to assist in cleaning properties. These free passes are given out on a case by case basis.
