Rice Selected to Serve Seward County District 5

Joe Denoyer - January 10, 2018 9:19 pm

January 10, 2018 – The Seward County Republican Party conducted the Selection Convention for the Seward County Commission 5th District seat to replace the position vacated by Jack Jacob. Seward County Republican Party Chair Nathan McCaffrey opened the meeting and was selected as the Convention Chair by the Delegates.

After approval of the Convention Agenda and reading and approval of the Convention Rules, the floor was opened for candidate nominations. Jim Rice, Chris Carlile, Nancy Parsons and Andy Stewart were nominated by the Delegates as candidates. After candidate speeches and a period of questions and answers, the Delegates voted and selected Jim Rice to fill the seat by a vote of 7-1. Rice formerly held the position prior to Jacob. His name will be forwarded to the Office of the Governor for confirmation and then he will be sworn in by the Seward County Clerk. He is expected to begin serving at the first County Commission meeting in February.

The term is a 4 year term that began in 2017. Jacob served 1 year. Rice will serve for 2018, but would need to run and win in 2018 to serve in 2019 and 2020. The seat is open for any 5th District resident who wishes to file and run. Contact the Seward County Clerk’s office for more information about the election process.
