Lady Redskins Win Outright WAC Title

Brock Kappelmann - February 24, 2017 7:18 am

For the first time since 2009, the Liberal Lady Redskins win the WAC.  They had already clinched a share of the WAC Tuesday in Garden City.  But Thursday in front of a frenzied Big House crowd, the Lady Skins beat Dodge City 44-41 to finish 7-1 in the WAC.

Liberal got off to a slow start against at Dodge City program that won the past two WAC titles.  The Lady Demons bolted to leads of 7-0 and 12-4.  DCHS led 12-7 after one.  The Lady Red stormed back to take a 22-17 lead and led 22-21 at halftime.  LHS led by as many as eight in the third at 36-28 and led 38-32 after three.  The Lady Redskins led 42-35 with 4:45 to play and 42-37 with 2:13 to go.  LHS committed two quick turnovers leading to baskets to make it 42-41 with 1:43.  LHS led 44-41 with 23 seconds left and then with 13.6 seconds left.  Machia Mullens blocked a two pointer in the closing seconds as Liberal defended Dodge City well on the final possession.

Jada Mickens led Liberal on Senior Night with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Laci Rush had nine and Audrey Gilmore had eight.

Liberal sweeps Dodge City for the first time since 2009.  The win snaps Dodge City’s seven game win streak in Liberal.  LHS is 16-2 and finishes 7-1 in the WAC while the Lady Demons are 6-14 and finish 2-6 in the WAC.  Liberal will host a playoff game Wednesday night on 1270 and kscbnews.net.  They will be a two, three, or four seed depending on a draw out of a hat or coin flip with Bishop Carroll and possibly Goddard.  That will happen Saturday morning.
