Thanksgiving Meal Tuesday at SCCC

Joe Denoyer - November 14, 2016 8:06 am

Seward County Community College and Great Western Dining invites the community to the college’s annual Thanksgiving dinner Tuesday. The free meal is served at the cafeteria in the SCCC Student Union from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and typically serves more than 500 guests.

In previous years, cafeteria director Jerry Odle has smoked 240 pounds of turkey breast and baked 260 of ham to prepare for the event.

“It’s a big one,” he said, “but it’s always a crowd-pleaser.”

Odle’s staff hand-carves the meats for guests to eat with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green bean casserole, carrots and peas, cole slaw, cranberry salad, relishes, salad bar options, fresh-baked rolls and, of course, pie.

“We baked 112 last year,” Odle said, “and this year will be no different.” Pies on the menu include pumpkin, pumpkin cheesecake, apple, cherry-peach, and mixed berry.

The Thanksgiving dinner at SCCC is a community standard, and a great introduction to the American holiday for international students enrolled at SCCC and the Colvin Adult Learning Center.

As always, the meal is free of charge.

SCCC will close for the Thanksgiving holiday at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, and the campus will remain closed through the end of that week. Classes resume Monday, Nov. 28.
