??Jackalopes, Hodags, and Other Larger than Life Myths from the American Road?

KSCB News - October 7, 2015 11:28 am

Join the Seward County Community College/Area Technical School Library for Lunch in the Library with Erika Nelson and her presentation, ??Jackalopes, Hodags, and Other Larger than Life Myths from the American Road? on Wednesday, October 14 at noon.

Learn about the larger-than-life legends of the jackalopes and hodags as well Paul Bunyan and Kansas’ own mythical figure Johnny Kaw. This presentation will examine their origins, the people who crafted them, and how they reflect the regions they inhabit.

“These larger-than-life myths and legends provide a snapshot of humor and wit that reflects our love of spinning a yarn, telling a tale,? said Nelson. ??The legends are spun from kernels of truth into expanded fantastic fantasies that reflect who we are.?

Nelson is an independent artist, educator, and director of World’s Largest Things, Inc. She received her MFA from the University of Kansas. Her interests include roadside attractions and art environments. She explores the back roads of the United States in search of the odd and unique, adding to her own ever-expanding project, the World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things.

The event is free and open to the public. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served.

??Jackalopes, Hodags, and Other Larger than Life Myths from the American Road? is part of the Kansas Humanities Council??s Humanities Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and discussions that examine our shared human experience??our innovations, culture, heritage, and conflicts.

The Kansas Humanities Council conducts and supports community-based programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to engage in the civic and cultural life of their communities.
