“That” Liberal Band To Present Spring Concert

KSCB News - May 4, 2015 11:36 am

On Thursday, Liberal High School Bands will be performing their Spring Awards Concert in the Maskus Auditorium, promptly at 8pm.

The program will open with the LHS Concert Band, directed by Grant Mathews. The Concert Band will play their State Large Group Festival Pieces: “Brighton Beach March,” by William Latham and “With Each Sunset,” by Richard Saucedo. They recently competed at the State Large Group Festival in Dodge City and Received an Excellent Rating (II).

The LHS Symphonic Band, directed by Lance Burnett, took the top Rating (I) at the State Level Festival and will be performing the Florentiner, by Julius Fucik and Arabian Dances by Brian Balmages. The march is very operatic in nature, and the audience will enjoy the story it tells. Arabian Dances employs ethnic percussion and will feature senior percussionists, Moises Popa, Marco Marin, and Dario Romero on Darbukas and Shakeres.

The next segment on the program will feature “That” Liberal Band with their performance of Sumus Futuro, “We Are the Future,” and the very enjoyable “Tijuana Brass Medley,” that includes: “Spanish Flea, Whipped Cream, the Lonely Bull, and Tijuana Taxi.” There are always a couple of surprises on the concert and this year is no different. After the awards presentation, and video, the LHS Band will feature Dave Kerwood, Guitar and Grant Mathews, Drums on the ever popular, “Carry On Wayward Son,” as recorded by the rock group, Kansas.

A short intermission will follow as the award winning LHS Jazzmen will take the stage. The Jazzmen boast two Superior Ratings (Is) this past winner, first at the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival on the Hutch Community College Campus in January and the SWOSU Jazz Festival, in February.

The LHS Jazzmen will close the program with a variety of music that features two battles on Saxophone. The first one is between Tenor Saxophonists: Eric Gomez and Alfredo Banuelos, and is followed by Alto Saxophonists: Jason Oyler and Adan Rosales. Lots of fun for everyone.

The LHS Band Concert is free and the general public is cordially invited to attend the May 7th event.
