Sigma Alpha Raises Funds for Bright Futures With Salsa Showdown

KSCB News - October 9, 2014 1:43 pm

On Saturday, October 4th, over 100 guests gathered to support Sigma Alpha’s first annual Salsa Showdown to benefit Bright Futures. Attendees sampled nine salsa entries from various groups and individuals, as well as salsa from seven local restaurants. Entries were judged on aroma, texture, flavor, and taste by guests, as well as official judges. Salsa entries ranged from a mild creamy avocado to a spicy salsa that left tasters looking for a cold drink. MacArthur Elementary’s entry, “The Mac Attack Salsa,” won both the People’s Choice award and was also the judge’s top pick with its appealing smoky, roasted pepper flavor.
Guests then enjoyed a taco bar buffet prepared by the Liberal Country Club with a live auction, led by Mayor Joe Denoyer, immediately following. The auction of 17 baskets donated by local businesses and organizations included items ranging from memberships, goods and services, and handmade pieces. Over $3000 was raised for Bright Futures, a local non-profit organization that supports USD 480 students and families.
