Phase One Of The Vortex2 Study Complete

KSCB News - June 24, 2009 12:00 am

Weather researchers have wrapped up the

first year of an ambitious two-year study aimed at learning how

tornadoes form and improving forecasters’ ability to predict them.

Scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research and

the Center for Severe Weather Research will talk about the study

Wednesday at an NCAR lab in Boulder.

An NCAR spokeswoman says detailed results won’t be available

because the data is still being studied.

The project, called Vortex2, involves more than 50 scientists,

40 research vehicles and mobile radars.

The first phase ran from May 10 through June 13. A second phase

is planned next year. The Vortex2 team was in Liberal, Seward County, and the surrounding area earlier this month.
